Malay Regt was based in Sembawang Camp then, and I remembered too that he presented a coloured photo of himself to be hung in the mess. But what my CO, the late Lt Col Mokti instructed us to do was to hung the photo only when he visits the unit. Otherwise, the photo is to be kept in the offrs mess store room. Of course the 'kambing' issue is true, and we also had a similar experience.Mohd Arshad Rajihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04280406045497460630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7108577687673016887.post-59670379361543171812010-03-15T12:10:20.635+08:002010-03-15T12:10:20.635+08:00Stories about the past are aplenty and recalling t...Stories about the past are aplenty and recalling them requires someone with a knack for story telling.

I too have several and the one that frequently surfaces, whenever we from 2 Rangers meet, is about the great Syed Alsagof.

We were stationed at Lok Kawi Camp, Sabah then. Our CO was another great guy - Col Harchand Singh.

Alsagof, GOC 1 Div, was slated to visit our battalion. I was tasked to take care of his food and drinks - a scrawny kambing jantan and a bunch of young coconuts (the Filipino variety).

But on the day of his arrival, the goat went missing. The poor animal must have got wind of its fate and had absconded during the night.

When Alsagof arrived the CO, wanting to curry favour, told him that his favourite air kelapa muda was ready. He offered him a tall glass filled with the drink. Alsagof brushed it aside and asked for Ribena instead. I had to dash to the NAAFI shop, a mile away, to buy a bottle.

Back at the mess, I saw an irate Alsagof berating Harchand for not aligning his photograph on the mess wall. "Dai Bai, gambar saya sengit nanti satu mess saya kasi sengit, tau!" he remarked.

I have plenty of other stories about Alsagof but this is the best since that was my first encounter with the man.

About dining out. I feel what matters is the quality of people who attend and organise one's dining out. It's the sincerity behind such display of loyalty and gratitude that is paramount.

The one "dining-out"(if I may use the term)I treasure most was a simple "daun pisang" lunch offered by my officers when I retired from Service.

It surpassed all other dinning-outs, formal and informal, for its simplicity, quality, ambiance and camaraderie.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06377546270209750557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7108577687673016887.post-49509468721808861712010-03-15T11:41:24.337+08:002010-03-15T11:41:24.337+08:00Dato',

It's a shame.

I know Jen Md Hashim Hussein very well and inspite of what others say about this ex-army senior, at least this guy never forgot the basics.

What has Jen Ismail Jamaluddin got to say?
