WHY THE CHANGE FROM ENGLISH TO BAHASA MALAYSIA?

What is wrong in using English for mathematics and science, and how sure is the government that by reverting to Bahasa Malaysia the students are expected to perform better in the two subjects.

I am in total disagreement with the decision to revert to Bahasa Malaysia, and I view it as a regression in our attempt to bring our future generation to greater heights in mastering both the subjects, as well as the English language. The only words to describe my disagreement is for me to say that the government is making a mess of our future generation. I just do not know what will become of my grandchildren who are now confused, and does the government really care? I know they don't because they can afford to send their children and grandchildren to be schooled overseas. I certainly cannot afford to give my grandchildren such luxury.

If the reason to revert back to Bahasa Malaysia is because the students, especially those in rural school, have performed poorly in the two subjects, then do not blame the students for their failures; blame the government for this because the government did not provided enough English training to the teachers. Haven't the Education Ministry heard the rumblings among some teachers of their concern in teaching the two subjects in English? Or was the Education Ministry merely thinking of making a test case out of these affected students?

Now the government has said that they will take all necessary steps to prepare teachers to be proficient in English, and increasing the time allocated to the teaching of English. There is also a proposal for the importation English teachers. This sounds like the time that I first started schooling, where some of the teachers were foreigners, especially the English teachers who were reportedly from Ceylon. And by increasing the period for English lessons, this will perforce increase the schooling hours. Or is the Education Ministry thinking of sacrificing some other not-so-important subjects, and what can these subjects be?

I am rather skeptical of the proposal brought forth by the government over this matter, because changes are seen to be made, simply because there is a change of a Minister. I do not know what actually goes on prior to a change being made, but if the decision is based on a political expediency, one can rest be assured that the decision is doomed to failure.

WHAT EVER THE PEOPLE SAY, THEY HAVE MADE A DECISION.

THE PEOPLE WHO PROTEST ARE LIKE SOME PEOPLE SAY "KACANG LUPA KULIT!"

THEY CAN SPEAK, WRITE AND READ PROPER ENGLISH BECOS THEY WERE PRODUCTS OF NTPS.

THEY GOT THEIR LCE/MCE/HSC CERTS FROM UK STANDARD ENGLISH.

THEY STUDIED IN THE US/UK/AUSTRALIA/CANADA/FRANCE......

BUT THEY WANT THE NEXT GENERATION TO STAY AND STUDY IN MALAYSIA & INDONESIA ONLY!

CAN'T THAT BE SEEN.

ONLY MINISTERS, WELL CONNECTED UMNO POLITICIANS AND CRONIES CAN AFFORD TO SEND THEIR KIDS ABROAD.

SO THAT WHEN THEY COME BACK THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES MOST QUALIFIED TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY!

SO MAINTAIN THE STATUS OF OTHER POOR MALAYS/INDIANS/CHINESE!

FOREVER BECOME A FISHERMAN/RUBBER TAPPER/PADI PLANTER & TARIK BECA!

MAMAK MAHATIR CHANGED IT WHEN HE WAS IN POWER, HE NOW REGRETS IT AND TRY TO RIGHT ALL HIS WRONGS ! HE ASKED WHERE ALL PETRONAS MONIES GONE! HE SPENT IT ALL AHA AND FORGETS IT NOW?

SO WHO TO BLAME?

PARENTS LAH!

WHY BECOS THEY VOTED FOR MAHATIR AND BN AND UMNO AND MCA AND MIC, AND GERKAN

The decision to abolish PPMSI is a huge mistake that will have disastrous consequences for our kids and future generations.

Will the decision provides a 100% guarantee that the anti-government and on-the-fence voters will swing their votes back to BN? What if the pro-PPMSI voters swing their votes to the opposition or choose not to vote at all? In the end, where do we place the rakyat - we and our future generations? What is the meaning of "1Malaysia = Rakyat Diutamakan", other than being a mere, empty slogan?

In addition, what strikes me was the statements by our Deputy PM and former Education Minister (DS Hishamuddin) that the decision was based on inputs from ALL interested parties, including the grassroots. All? Was it the voice of the majority? I wonder! Who were the interested parties? Tun Mahathir himself said: "Although my views were sought, they are not reflected in the decision." I would dearly love to read the final report on which the decision was based. The government should make it public.

The decision sure smells of politics. Was the future of our children taken into consideration at all?

Critical decisions on our national policies, such as PPMSI, require a formidable political will from a strong leader. Do we see that in our present leader?

Tun Mahathir is now conducting a poll on this decision at his blog. The latest figures are 77% NO, 23% YES. This means 77% are against the decision so far. Isn't this also the voice of the majority? Will the government listen?

As the drama unfolds we shall see how Najib now says that the BN is listening to it's people and does a reverse turn, and we will all be conned by this spin. Aiyah! modus operandi same same lah. Imagine how easy it is to stay in power with the rural masses illiterate in English and unable to get access to the world, whilst their children are educated in Oxford. What a tangled web we weave.

It would be a mistake to think that mastering of English would make us a better nation. On the contrary, Japan and Korea have proven that it is possible to be economic giants using their own mother tongue in their education system.

Instead, the government should make it compulsory for students to master Mandarin and Tamil. It will help with national integration, as well as better economic engagagement with China and India, whic are seen to be the future economic giants in our region.

The revert to Bahasa Malaysia (one time bahasa melayu and baku) means to retard the nation's progress and our people back by 20 years or more. If the rural children cannot catch up, it does not mean that others' progress must be retarded to accommodate their low capabilities and IQs. I remember in Thailand, almost the whole population uses the Thai language in schools. Consequently, the people cannot speak any other second language but Thai. However, those parents who are rich, have high government positions or businesses, send their children overseas to acquire better knowledge especially English. Those well educated in English will do well in careers, like overseas postings, important ministrial posts and also businesses with international flavours. Connected with this revert to Bahasa Malaysia, I was surprised that UMNO Youth Head - Khairy, as reported in the papers, did favour the revert to Bahasa Malaysia. His education was all overseas, being a diplomat's son, and got a scholarship to Oxford as well. I just wonder how a well overseas educated man cannot see the advantages of an English education, albeit even if limited to maths and science. My children had their education in Bahasa Malaysia, and yet they have had no problems in mastering English. In Communist China today, the cry is for the people to learn English - as publicised in CCTV9, the only communication medium that will hasten progress of a nation.
