DO WE NEED A 38 YEAR OLD PERSON ON THE BOARD OF PETRONAS?

Can someone satisfy my conscience by justifying that a 38 year old gentleman by the name of Omar Mustapha Ong is professionally and technically qualified to be a director of the largest national conglomerate....Petronas. Yes, he may be a brilliant Petronas scholar who is a Oxford graduate, but can we be certain that he is equally brilliant in contributing effectively to the management of Petronas?

He can be brilliant as a special officer to the PM Najib, when the latter was the DPM. And if he is extremely brilliant, Omar Mustapha should be better employed to manage the financial woes affecting the nation today, and just leave Petronas to be managed by professional in the oil and gas industry. And Petronas, rightly so has its reservation with regards to the appointment of Omar Mustapha as a board member to the company.

By wanting to appoint Omar Mustapha, is PM Najib implying that the current board members of Petronas is not performing well, and requires the likes of Omar Mustapha to rejuvenate Petronas? Or is the current President and Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Hassan Merican showing signs of incompetency, and is on the verge of a 'downward trend, and Omar Mustapha's presence is to salvage Petronas from slipping?.

I am told that Petronas has not had a politician as a board member, and if Omar Mustapha does get a position in Petronas, he will create history, and I suppose the youngest to be named to the board. Former PM Tun Mahathir Mohamed who is currently the present advisor to Petronas opined that “a politician in Petronas may have other agenda which may or may not be in keeping with the national interest”.

PM Najib choice of Omar Mustapha, whom many say is a close associated of PM Najib, may raise many unwieldy perceptions of PM Najib among the general public, that will place him in bad light. Certainly, the first perception will be that Omar Mustapha is a sure crony of PM Najib, who will act as PM Najib's proxy in the oil and gas business, even if PM Najib does not have any business dealing with Petronas. The second perception would be that PM Najib wants to groom his crony for the exulted post of President and Chief Executive Officer of the conglomerate, and to eventually secure all his cronies to a top managerial position in the company. The list of perceptions are endless, and these are 'fodder' for the opposition to justify the unworthiness of the BN government and PM Najib, during the next general elections.

PM Najib has to seriously look at Indonesia's Pertamina, and to see what had caused it to be, what it is today..........the once super rich Indonesian industry that is now struggling to remain afloat. Strangely, UMNO is silent over the intended appointment of Omar Mustapha to the Petronas board.

Dear Dato'
They might as well put Rosmah Mansor on the board, with Jamaludin Jarjis and to be fair to Indians - Samy veloo. What an oil party the nation can have! pardon my cynicism, but I just have given up hope.

I think there is no harm having people like Omar Mustapha Ong on the Petronas Board.Alone, he cannot do much to steer the Board towards making any decisions fulfilling the personal requirements of his political and business friends.I am sure the other Directors are knowledgeable enough to counter any moves by him that could potentially be disastrous to Petronas.

We all know the Director is not at all involved in the day-to-day operational management of Petronas. This is handled by the CEO and his team.Being director Omar Mustapha Ong's role would be confined to policy inputs at the Board's level.

This is where Omar Mustapha Ong's role at the Board level could be decisive. We need all the best brains that the country could muster to help Petronas grow from strength to strength. He could for example be tasked by the Board to look into how Petronas would operate as a business entity once our national oil reserves run dry which I believe is not too far-off in the distant future. This is a formidable strategic questions which need to be addressed before it is too late.

We need the likes of Omar Mustapha Ong to make the necessary contributions so that Petronas could be an international household names in the coming Green Revolution which is bound to come because the USA is pushing it!

To support my earlier argument that Petronas need young, energetic and brilliant thinker on the Board of Petronas, consider how much Petronas and the nation could have gained financially if they are prepared to invest in the technology of the future.

The thumb drive I was told was invented by a Malaysian. But Taiwan profited from this Malaysian invention because they have the foresight to back him.

So we need people like Omar Mustapha Ong to help Petronas to capture future brilliant inventions by our people for the global market.

Felda has set the standard by going global.Through Felda Global Ventures they have acquired Twin River Technologies (oleochemicals company) based in North America and entered into joint venture with IFFCO a food manufacturing company operating in Asia and Africa.

Apparently the brain behind this move is none other Datuk Mohd Bakke Salleh the CEO of Felda who is rumoured to replace TS Merican as the new CEO of Petronas.

The plan is to make Felda Global Venture an integrated multi-crop and agro business entity that can compete in the global market.

We wish Felda Global Venture success in the visionary undertaking.

We hope Petronas can do better than Felda as they have bigger financial asset.

Omar, though young, is a brilliant strategic personality that Petronas can truly benefit. Remember, Alexander the Great was only 36 when he conquered the then known world.
