Blogger Mej Nor Ibrahim Sulaiman, a retired officer of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has since 2009 been on a crusade for several officers and men of the RMAF who have since retired, to be awarded with the appropriate award in recognition of their gallant and outstanding service to the nation. Mej Nor Ibrahim believes that these brave and gallant officers and airmen have been deprived of their recognition, while some other not so deserving cases have been awarded.
Reading from the numerous writings in his blog (http://xnuripilot.blogspot.com), Mej Nor Ibrahim, despite having written to the appropriate authorities and individuals, is still not able to convince any one of them to consider his appeal in awarding those officers and airmen of the RMAF. I can sense the frustration in Mej Nor Ibrahim, a retired air force officer whose sole purpose is to seek what is due for the officers and airmen that had once been his comrade at arms. I can see no other retired military officer like him who has taken so much of time and effort to dutifully serve others. I now begin to wonder why the serving military officers at Mindef, and in particular the air force big-wigs have to ‘insulate’ themselves away from the cause that Mej Nor Ibrahim is trying to perpetuate?
In an article that Mej Nor Ibrahim wrote to the Berita Harian dated 10th February 2011, he questioned why wasn’t any one of the 18 policemen that died defending the police station at Bukit Kepong, Negeri Sembilan during a raid by communist terrorist in the early hours of 23 February 1950, not being awarded a single gallantry award. The policemen were outnumbered by a ratio of 10:1 and stood against the terrorist until they were shot dead and burned. Are their actions not heroism? Or have they all to be alive to tell the tale and to prove themselves heroes?
In his blog, Mej Nor Ibrahim had made a comparison between the Bukit Kepong incident and that of the Bukit Jenalik/Sauk incident that occurred on 6 July 2000. I don’t wish to describe the Bukit Jenalik/Sauk incident because this incident is well known to the military and police circle, and it has also been made into a documentary film by History TV channel that only speaks of individual exploits, and not the many others who were intimately involved in the planning and execution of the operations.
The Bukit Jenalik/Sauk incident is to me an act undertaken by a group of criminals that has made national heroes of six individuals; two being recipients of the gallantry award of SP, and the remaining four, the PGB. I am told that not a single shot was fired at the criminals, and I suppose this must be the reason why the six were awarded the nation’s highest award for valour. In the case of Bukit Kepong where 18 of our policemen and including 4 police dependents were killed and burned, not a single person was awarded; not even the lowly rated KPK.
Are we to believe that the policemen did nothing to defend themselves? Are we to believe that they did not shoot a single round, but instead ran away, which is an act of cowardice? Are we to believe that they surrendered themselves for fear of being killed? And I think, it must be for these reasons that they were not treated as heroes.
Now, in the case of Bukit Jenalik/Sauk, was there a firefight with bullets sizzling over the heads of our heroes, and with them charging through to disarm and capture the criminals? Are we to believe that by pushing down someone who is already frightened and confused, should rightfully be called a national hero and be crowned the SP? And for being caught and shot dead, should that dead person be called a hero and deserve the PGB? Are we to believe that the criminals should be treated as enemies of the state, like we did for the communist terrorist and insurgents?
There are several questions raised as to how could the six ‘heroes’ deserve the SP and PGB. They must be super heroes to outclass the British and Gurkha soldiers that fought in the Falklands. Please let me know how many of them were awarded the VC by the Queen? The Bukit Jenalik heroes must have even outclassed Kanang’s act of bravery and valour.
I would like to appeal to the authorities and to all that reads this, to voice their support for what Mej Nor Ibrahim has been trying to do since 2009. Six awards for valour in just a single incident at Bukit Jenalik/Sauk, and not a single award for the twenty two who died defending their post against an overwhelming enemy force makes little sense to me.

WITNESS PROTECTION ACT – A VIEW
Perak’s PPP Deputy Chairman and criminal lawyer Dr. Naran Singh has said that the trio involved in the screening of a sex video that alleges Anwar Ibrahim’s involvement should be protected under the Witness Protection Act (WPA). The Act stipulates that ‘any witness who comes forward to reveal privy information on acts of wrong doing should be given rightful protection’.
I am no lawyer but my interpretation and understanding of the Act may differ from that of Dr. Naran in this particular case. I would agree with Dr. Naran if the trio calling themselves Datuk ‘T’ did not deliberately call for the newsmen (I do not know how many of them) to Carcosa for a public viewing of the video. Had the trio maintained absolute privacy of the video, and went directly to the police, then I think WPA applies. But by having to screen the video to the newsmen and subsequently publishing it the following day makes it public information, and is no longer privy information.
My perception of the case is simply that the trio wanted to cast aspersion on Anwar character and for the press to believe that the person in the video was indeed Anwar. The motive is ill intended. If one is to listen to the press statement given by YB Johari Abdul who was invited by the trio to see the video, than one would have a different perception of the case. Regardless whether if it was Anwar or not in the act, but a good Muslim would never ever want to do what the trio had done. It is outright slander, and the trio being Muslims would know what it takes to slander someone. What if the investigation concludes that it wasn’t Anwar the porn actor?
Some would say that I am only trying to defend Anwar. It is far from that. The issue in question here is one of slander, and it has nothing to do with whether it was Anwar or otherwise. I am only defending the right of an individual against an act of slander, and clearly the act of the trio is definitely one of slander. And what makes this issue even worse is that the persons involved in the screening of the video are persons of influence and dignity. I do not know whether my readers will agree with me on this.
My only humble response to Dr. Naran is that I beg to differ from his views and opinion of the case. I would stick by my decision that the trio does not deserve to be protected under the WPA, but is to be investigated for being in possession of a pornographic video and for screening it in public.

IBRAHIM ALI NEED TO CHANGE
PERKASA President Ibrahim Ali has instructed grassroot members to monitor bloggers, tweets, news reports and portals that write on sensitive issues relating to Islam, Bahasa Malaysia, Malay special rights, citizenship of non-Malays and issues pertaining to the position of the King.
I think Ibrahim has gone overboard. To me, the main issue fronting the country today is Malay disunity. Solve this problem, and you solve all the issues that he had asked his grassroot members to monitor.
Malay disunity if not handled properly is worse than fighting the communist terrorist. And does Ibrahim know how difficult it is to get rid of the communist threat. It took us almost 4 decades, at the expense of losing hundreds of lives of good Malay and good non-Malay soldiers and policemen. Just wonder if Ibrahim has ever operated in the jungle areas for a stretch of 90 days with a 40kg load behind his back? We the soldiers and the police did all that, just to ensure Ibrahim and his family lives in peace.
The main problem lies with the Malays themselves, especially those with vested interest. Malay politicians are experts at creating issues that disunites and causes mistrust among Malays and non-Malays alike. Why do they do this? It is simply to strengthen their position in guarding their interests especially one that can further their power and wealth. I see that politics today is centered on the acquisition and retention of power and wealth, and nothing else. I think, it is for this very reason the incumbent government and its leaders fear about losing power, for without the hold on political power, everything is lost.
Actually, Malay leaders are in the best position to lead, provided they are principled, guided and take cognizance of the teaching of the holy Koran. If Malay leaders are guided by the Koran in the performance of their duties as leaders of society, their personal behavior and character that they exhibit will in itself set an example for others to follow. Forget about one being a Malay for a moment, for it is not the ‘Malayness’ that is a factor that unites, but it is the virtues of a good Muslim that will attract people to unite and to follow him. I am quite certain, a person (regardless of race) that practices and possess the virtues of a good Muslim can be an ideal leader, and there are not many among our leaders today that truly possess such qualities; not even the Religious Minister.
My brotherly advice to Ibrahim is to stop talking about the supremacy of the Malay race or harping on Malay special rights. Seek ways to unite the Malays first and with unity come strength. Teach your members to be guided by the teachings of the holy Koran and be a good Muslim first. Although you say that you are not racist, but your acts and the way you talk makes you a number one racist and this is counterproductive to all your talk about Malay unity. Just being a good orator means nothing to me. Finally, you need a major change in your character and behavior Ibrahim, if you want to gain respect from all Malaysians. And by asking your members to monitor all that you want them to do is to me, a total waste of time and effort.

CAN WE ACHIEVE A TRUE MALAYSIAN SOCIETY?
MCA President Chua Soi Lek (CSL) is reported to have said that “the onus is on Anwar to prove that he is not involved” as the prime porn star captured on video that has made headlines throughout the nation and particularly the blogsphere. I just could not understand the reason why CSL would want to say this? He being a Muar porn star once before, took no effort to prove his innocence, but admitted to being the actor in the video. He had to admit because the picture of him in the act is as clear as daylight, and to deny will only incriminate him as being a blatant liar.
In the case of Anwar, it is clear as daylight too that the actor is not him as alleged, and this is clearly explained by the Sg. Petani PKR MP Johari, who had seen the video himself at Flamingo Hotel, Ampang, at the invitation of the unscrupulous conspirator Rahim Thamby Chik. And this Thamby, as we all know was once a child molester himself, but got his freedom due to ‘insufficient evidence’, they claimed. To all holders of the honorific title of Tan Sri, this Thamby has made a mockery of the exulted title.
If I were in Anwar’s shoes, I wouldn’t be bothered to claim my innocence. Why should I, because I know that I am not involved. It is for the conspirators to prove that I am guilty. But with the advancement of technology these days, my looks can be changed even in a video recording. This is what the conspirators wanted to do, but they did it poorly due to their lack of expertise in IT. So you can see how stupid these conspirators are, and they have now become the bad guys as oppose to being heralded as heroes.
I am absolutely clear that this sexual episode is a conspiracy or ‘fitnah’ to bring Anwar to his knees. I am taught that Allah works in mysterious ways and ‘fitnah’ being a grievous sin in Islam is easily revealed by the will of Allah to the truth, even before Anwar could be hauled by the police. The conspirators must have liked to make this a political campaign agenda during the up-coming Sarawak state elections to damn the PR. But what they get in return is to give PR campaigners an opportunity to ‘whip’ and castigate their political enemies by exposing the wrong doing of the BN politicians. Personally, I do not know how the alleged Anwar’s sex video can influence the Sarawak voters, but I am very certain the Sarawak urbanites are as fed-up as I am of these continuous conspiracies by enemies of Anwar.
My concern and worry now is what next? Will we hear another explosive story concerning Anwar on the horizon? Now, we hear that the Religious Minister Jamil Khir has accused Anwar of preaching something that is against Islam overseas. Is this another way of damning Anwar? This accusation can be exploited by the opponents of Anwar. But I would also like to hear what Jamil Khir has to say about Thamby and his failed conspiracy theory. Please answer me if it isn’t ‘fitnah’ that the Thamby is advocating against the very teachings of Islam. I need to ask whether Thamby knows what ‘fitnah’ is, and if he does not know then he will have to wait until he is six feet under.
Clearly, what we see happening today is a battle of a Malay against another Malay, and of people professing the same faith i.e. Islam. This is disgusting. If Prophet Mohammed PBUH gave protection to the Christians, I do not see any reason why a Muslim should condemn another Muslim. If everyone (regardless of race)had followed the path of Prophet Mohammed PBUH in propagating Islam as a way of life and to be subservient to Allah, and not to be saddled by racial sentiments and false supremacy, then only could we have a harmonious, peaceful and a tolerant Malaysian society. But sadly, Malaysians today are far from it.

EZAM HAS AWAKENED FROM HIS SLUMBER
Ezam Md. Nor (a Senator…mind you) is reported to have urged the authorities (presumably referring to the Immigration Department or may be KDN minister Hishamuddin himself) to impound Anwar Ibrahim’s passport to prevent him (Anwar) from going abroad and tarnishing the country’s image.
This turncoat Ezam who become famous for declaring to having in his possession several boxes of what is thought to be documents relating to the corrupt practices of BN/UMNO leaders, has once again opened his big mouth. I am still waiting to see the contents of the boxes which will never appear for as long as he is being salaried by the government. Hopefully he will be rewarded with a Datukship soon for being a loyal servant. May be, when he is out of a job, he may once again try to threatened the government with the famous boxes.
If indeed Ezam is so concern about Anwar’s tarnishing the country’s image abroad, what about the involvement of the famous Thamby (Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik) with the latest video that purportedly shows Anwar as the main porno actor. In comparison to Anwar’s alleged bad mouthing abroad, this latest bluff by the three morons (including the famous Thamby) has hurt the image of the country even more. Malaysia is no longer being looked upon as a model Muslim nation that practices inter-racial and religious tolerance, but a nation that is fast on the decline due to incompetency by some of its leaders. Honestly, I have never been so angry and fed-up until this story of the sex video that only shows how mean and dirty Malaysian politics can be. All the fuss about Anwar being the porno actor has now fizzled out.
Since the sex video story was out, I browsed through a number of blogs (reading the mainstream papers no longer interest me) that writes about the sex video story. One is surprised to read the comments from viewers that express nothing else but anger and frustration at what they see as a decay in the moral values of our politicians, where even those with honorific titles of Tan Sri and Datuk can stoop so low to involve themselves with such an immoral and disgusting act. I am already beginning to feel ashamed to be called a Dato, but on second thought I do not mind it, now that I am truly a full-fledged Datuk with four lovely grandchildren.
I sincerely hope that the police will do a good job this time to nail all those involved in this scandalous sex story about Anwar Ibrahim. If indeed Anwar was involved, he should rightfully go to jail. But if it is not, then all the perpetrators (even if they carry the honorific title of Tan Sri and Datuk) should be thrown into jail and be left there to rot. And should all the perpetrators escape the jail sentence due to the famous ‘insufficient evidence’ finding, then they will all have to wait until they are buried to be tried in the hereafter.
So Ezam, what have to say now?

ANWAR’S PURPORTEDLY SEXUAL ESCAPADE
GUTTER POLITICS………..what else can I say to this latest sensational sexual escapade that purportedly figured Anwar Ibrahim as its prime actor. Haven’t we had enough of his ongoing sodomy trial, and the first sodomy trial that had incarcerated him for 6 years in Sg. Buloh prison? Haven’t we witnessed the brutality and abuse of the then IGP Tan Sri Rahim Noor who presented Anwar with a dishonorable black eye. What followed was a brief prison sentence of the country’s No 1 policeman that was enough to honour him with the title of an ex-convict. And finally, haven’t we seen enough destruction caused by the riotous supporters of Anwar Ibrahim following his arrest by balaclava clad police officers that had caused uncertainties and fear among the general population at the time?
If at all somebody seriously wants Anwar off the political scene and be placed in limbo, why not do it the Altantuya way i.e. just shoot him dead and blast him with another C4. Hired killers are not too difficult to get these days for a small fee. And whoever had devised this damn idea to expose this cheap stuff ‘CSL alike sexual scene’, and at a time when the Sarawak state election is just around the corner ought to have their heads examined for insanity.
And how the hell did the authorities allow this mysterious Datuk ‘T’ to assemble the media and to screen a pornographic video with such impunity? Isn’t the act by Datuk ‘T’ an offence in itself? And if I were to do the same at my house, wouldn’t I be arrested for it? By referring himself a Datuk, this insane person has made a fool of the honorific title. I would like to suggest that the honorific title be withdrawn from him immediately as this low down scum does not deserve the title.
This latest and unthinkable act by Datuk ‘T’ (I wonder what the alphabet ‘T’ means. Could it be ‘tonggong’), must be the work of not just a single person, but a well crafted mindless idea by a number of Anwar’s political enemies that wants him simply out of the political scene, or better still dead. If Datuk ‘Tonggong’ thinks that he can demolish Anwar’s political career by this evil scheming plot, he may be totally wrong. Look at what happened to Anwar after the first sodomy trial and upon his release from prison? Was he weakened and destroyed? No, he didn’t. In fact he becomes much stronger and popular, and the 2008 general election was a coveted price for the opposition led by Anwar Ibrahim himself.
I am no fan of Anwar Ibrahim, but as a human being and more so as a Muslim, I sympathize with all that he had gone through. One do not need to go through the experiences of Anwar to understand the sufferings that he had endured and more so, that of his wife, children and grandchildren. And what saddens me most is that this unscrupulous and evil plot is undoubtedly the work of Malays of the Muslim faith. I do not believe it is being done by non-Malay or a non-Muslim. Is this how a Malaysian Muslim treats a fellow Malaysian Muslim? Show me where in the Koran is such an act approved by Allah? Only a person with the heart and mind of a Devil or a Satan would do such a thing.
I have been talking to a number of people over this sad episode, and I can safely say for certain that the government has lost a lot of points in its popularity poll. The mainstream media sure had a gala day reporting and making it known to the entire world how mean and dirty is Malaysian politics. This to me is the most stupid and unthinkable act that will only strengthen Anwar’s popularity even more and conversely, the hatred for the good name of the government. I think, all that PM Najib is trying hard to do to uplift the popularity of his administration as well as himself, has all gone to waste. PM Najib and the entire UMNO leadership can deny their involvement, but the perceptions of most likeminded Malaysians that some BN/UMNO linked supporters are seriously involved; remain entrench in their minds.
As a Muslim, my advice to all those that are involved in this dastardly act is to repent and seek forgiveness; not from Anwar, but from Allah the almighty. ‘Fitnah’ and to shame someone (regardless of one’s faith) is a grievous sin. Well Datuk ‘Tonggong’, the ball is now at your feet.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE ARMY?
It was announced recently that prisoners on parole and are due to be released will be send to selected army camps for rehabilitation. The announcement was made by Internal Security Minister Hishamuddin Hussein who reasoned that by having such prisoners placed at army camps was a way to separate them from being influenced by the hardcore prisoners. It was also reported that such rehabilitation programme would save the government from having to build more prisons that are presently over-crowded to the brim.
I view such a programme as being short-sighted, at best stupid and lacking in ideas. I do not know of any other army in the world that does a similar programme ; certainly I know of none now except us. I think we have stretch the slogan ‘Malaysia Boleh’ a bit too much and have made the army; the so-called honourable defenders of the nation, nothing more than an agency that provides ‘cheap multi-purpose security guards’.
If the intended programme is indeed to save the government from building more prisons, then I would say that all the assurance made by the Internal Security Minister that the national crime rate has reduced substantially is merely an ‘eye wash’. How could he justify that the over-crowding of the prisons to a reduction in crime rate? Isn’t the increase in prisoners equals to an increase in criminals which is represented by the increase in crime rates?
I recall some years ago during the outbreak of the JE epidemic where soldiers were deployed to shot and kill the infected swine. This is indeed a strange task given to the army; a task that they were ill-equipped nor trained for; certainly not killing swine.
I also recall that the army was once tasked to monitor illegal timber loggers, and this is another strange task for the army, and fortunately no illegal loggers were shot dead. Otherwise the soldier would have to answer to the court for murder.
In 1997 or thereabout, the army was tasked to take over the responsibility of maintaining surveillance over illegal Indonesian immigrants from the police, at designated illegal entry points along the coastline of peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. Such a task should rightfully be the responsibility of the police or any other para military units.
I remembered having to present a case during a seminar where I argued that such an operation should not be the army’s responsibility. I quoted the example of the Indian and Pakistan army where they deployed the para military units to maintain surveillance along their common border areas. The regular forces were being held back, only to be deployed when there is a breach by either force along their lines of control. I was privileged to have visited and studied the nature of such operations while a student at the Indian Staff College.
Now, with the latest responsibility of the army having to have prisoners under their watch, I do not know what next for the army. It is anybody’s guess. I hope it is not going to be looking after some sick and insane patients that are longer wanted by the health authorities. If such a task is to be given to the army, then I can only say this……………………that we have all gone sick ourselves.

VETERAN’S WARD LAUNCHED AT TENGKU MIZAN ARMED FORCES HOSPITAL
Yesterday March 10, 2011, I attended the official launching of the Veteran’s Ward at the Tengku Mizan Armed Forces Hospital by the Defence Minister YB Dato Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Gathered at the launching ceremony were about 150 veterans of all ranks; the most senior among them were former CDF Gen Tan Sri Ghazali Seth and Gen Tans Sri Abd Rahman Hamid. I would have liked to see more senior veterans attend the occasion.
In the speech by the Defence Minister, he said that the idea to establish the Veteran’s Ward was mooted by Lt Kol Dato Kam Yoon Seng, a retired Royal Signals Corps officer who first made the proposal to the Veteran Affairs Department back in 2009. The proposal was immediately brought to the attention of the Defence Minister who approved it without much hesitation.
I have known Lt Kol Dato Kam from our days serving together at HQ 6 Brigade, Sg. Petani during the formative period back in 1969. And this idea having to come from him does not surprise me at all because Lt Kol Dato Kam is well known for his concern and wellbeing of his officers and men during his time in service. As a young Captain then, I have learnt one excellent trait from Lt Kol Dato Kam i.e. the art of being humble and patience.
Besides the Veteran’s Ward, the Defence Minister also proposed that a special pharmacy dispensing counter be establish for the veterans to minimize the waiting time for the collection of medicine. The long waiting time has been the general complaint among Veterans and this proposal is certainly welcomed by the Veterans.
It is inspiring to note that veterans are now being remembered and honoured with a special ward at the hospital, should they at any point in time require the medical services of the Armed Forces. A similar facility is also being planned at the two other Armed Forces Hospitals i.e. at Terendak and Lumut.
What is most comforting is that the wards are all located at the ground floor and this allows easy and shorter access to would be patients to the wards, as well as to ease visiting family members. For this, I congratulate the hospital administrators for having such consideration and thought.
I observed that most veterans that were at the launching ceremony are in their 60’s; and at this age physical fitness in them have long pass. Some may be the ‘gang-ho’ commandoes once before, but at that age one cannot pretend that they are ‘gang-go’ anymore.
In his final remark, the Defence Minister appealed to all veterans to utilize the medical facilities and services available at the hospital, as this is the government way of showering gratitude and appreciation to the veterans for their service and loyalty to the nation.

HAVE NO PITY FOR CORRUPTION
Over the last few days two cases of corruption were reported in the media. The first involving a politician and the other, a senior a government official. What horrifies me is that both are Malays, and I say without any inhibition that they are a disgrace to the Malay race.
First, Mustafa Salim, the Lenggeng assemblyman has been found guilty of accepting RM2000 from a contractor as inducement to issue a supporting letter to mine sand. The offence was committed two years ago. Sentence will be fixed on 1st April, i.e. on April fool day. Should he be sentenced to prison, we can shall see another by-election; the 16th I think.
Second, Datuk Bakaruddin Othman, the FT and Urban Wellbeing Ministry Deputy Secretary General and former President Selayang Municipal Council claimed trial to using the council’s funds to renovate his private home amounting to RM26,000. The offence was committed in 2001, and he having to rise to his current position is mind boggling. I thought that if a serving civil servant is being charged for an offence and is awaiting trial, he/she would have been suspended until the case is resolve. In this particular case, I think being moved from President Municipal Council and to be assigned to his current position is a promotion. Is this an oversight by the PSC, or is it the stand by PSC that regardless of the offence, a person is innocent until proven otherwise? And why does a simple case like this takes almost a decade to be heard?
The general view is that cases like this that involves politicians and government officials are merely the tip of the iceberg. These two personalities are unfortunate to be caught (or are they plain stupid) and I am sure there are many others like them, but they have been able to evade arrest. It is merely a matter of time when the others too will be caught because once a person indulges in corruption, it is an unstoppable crave. Corruption is akin to cancer that keeps recurring and is difficult to care.
For a paltry sum, these two personalities will be subjected to public humiliation, and what is worse, a likely prison term. I just wonder if the thought of a public humiliation and a prison term were conscious in their minds before they committed the offence. I personally don’t think so because the urge and temptation for illicit money and wealth is too much for them to reject. And I also tend to believe that this is not the first time they committed such an offence, but it must have been a number of times before. Normally, people would just ignore the ‘first timers’, and people will only begin to act against those that are persistently corrupt. It has also been observed that those that are corrupt tend to be boastful and would unconsciously show-off their newly acquired ill gotten wealth. This is when they finally get caught.
I do not have the slightest pity for these two offenders because being public figures they know too well the consequences. And if they are found to be guilty (hope they will), they will get two punishments i.e. first, the punishment they get on earth and secondly, the punishment that awaits them in the hereafter. Of course, the latter punishment is the most severe.
My question now, will this serve a lesson for others?

PM NAJIB AND RAJA PETRA KAMARUDDIN IN AUSTRALIA!
Both PM Najib Tun Razak (NTR) and Raja Petra Kamaruddin (RPK) are in Australia at about the same time, and what a coincidence. RPK when asked says that it is not him who is following NTR, but he thinks it is NTR who is following him.
NTR mission is to try to lobby for Australian government’s support for an improved bilateral relations and partnership, and from what was reported, NTR has to some extend achieved that mission. Australian PM Julia Gillard is reported to have remarked that, “The PM (Najib) with me now is a friend of Australia and a leader in the region” and went further to say that, “I salute your (Najib) leadership of the Global Movement of the Moderates”.
RPK on the other hand is on a round of talk to students, interviews and meetings with likeminded Malaysians and the people of Australia, to present to them his perspective and views of the political landscape in Malaysia, as well as issues that has caused concern among Malaysians, that to his mind, has impacted the country’s image abroad.
While NTR’s visit to Australia has received wide media coverage by the mainstream media (MSM), RPK’s trip gets no media coverage at all by the MSM, except the blogs. It is interesting to listen to the discourse that RPK had with Malaysians (and some foreigners, I suppose) at the Australian National University posted in Malaysian Today, and in particular at how he articulates issue relating to Malaysian politics and other issues of concern to Malaysians.
One may be quick to denounce him as being anti establishment for his critical views, but one must also understand that he is an activist, and what do you expect him to do or say? I think, RPK has been quite balance in his views, and anyway it is up to the people to weight for themselves whether RPK’s argument makes sense or otherwise. The point I am trying to bring out here is that not all critical views are meaningless and absurd. Critical views have its positive side as well in that it can act as ‘check and balance’ and sometimes even act as inputs to change.
It was only recently at a wedding that someone told me that I am anti establishment. I was shocked and I quickly responded by saying that I am not. I told him that I am neither pro nor anti establishment, but I am merely trying to cast my personal critical views. I am pleased that the person seated next to me supported by argument and that boasted at bit of my confidence and morale.
You see, in the military officers are taught to be critical and analytical in their thinking (CAT) because it is through CAT that wars can be won. The evolution of strategies and tactics are as a result of CAT, and stereotypes will certainly find themselves sidelined in any intellectual discourse over strategies and tactics. At Staff College, the ‘Appreciation of the Situation’ (I do not know what it is termed now) that students write is CAT and similarly, the follow up discussions in the model room and outdoor tactical exercises. Even in their daily meetings, CAT is put to practice as a means of soliciting ideas and by doing so; can they be prejudged as being anti establishment? I don’t think so?
It was also reported that RPK was to be invited to a tea function where NTR was to attend. However, RPK was said to have turned down the invitation. I thought RPK should have accepted the invitation as this would possibly give him a ‘once in a life time’ opportunity to speak directly to NTR. And furthermore, RPK does not have to worry about being surrounded by the police or bodyguards ready to pounce on him the moment he opens his mouth. Similarly, I do not think NTR would be too pleased either to have PKR invited because the latter might be a cause of embarrassment.
I am just wondering………..between NTR and RPK, who do you think appealed most to the Australian?

UMMI HAFILDA TURNED ‘POLITICIAN’
Ummi Hafilda, the sister of PKR’s Deputy President Azmin Ali has joined the campaign bashing trail of Anwar Ibrahim and Azmin Ali at Merlimau. Did she come on the campaign trail on her own accord, or was she invited to campaign for a certain political party, is anyone’s guess. But by the tone of her campaign, it is obvious that she is out to discredit and demolish the opposition and in particular Anwar Ibrahim and his brother Azmin Ali.
What was the reason for dragging her into this campaign? What is it in the mind of Ummi to even discredit her own sibling? Is she insane or what? If she has been dragged into the campaign trail by a certain political party, why use the uncultured method of bad mouthing people? Is this the behaviour that we want to show our children that the Malays have nothing better to do, other than to bad mouth others? Does Ummi not know that what she is doing is not only unethical but a grievous sin?
I just like to ask Ummi this question? Is she a Malay that profess the Muslim faith or is she some alien creature from outer space that is neither a Malay nor profess any religious faith at all? Has she no shame to go on bad mouthing others including her own family member, and worse still in front of a multi racial crowd? For Ummi to do all this is definitely the work of a devil, or is she a devil herself? I say this because no person in the right frame of mind and worse still a lady would want to do such a shameful act. I now understand the reason why her late father had denounced her, and this issue is well known in public domain. And to be denounced by her parents is indeed a grievous sin. Now, she appears to have denounced her own sibling.
Now let’s get to the bottom of this horrible and senseless campaigning that has gotten from bad to worse. If this is how politicians are to show to the world the way campaigning is done in this country, then I say that I have nothing to be proud of being a Malaysian. This senseless campaigning is nothing more than to win votes and winning an election has little regards for tact, respect and honour for others. As Ummi has demonstrated, one does not need to be intelligent, tactful and honourable. She thinks, speaking rubbish and acting like a fool is enough to appeal to the voters, and for those that had brought in fools to campaign on their behalf; they are the bigger fools.
My advice to Ummi is to repent and to act like a respectable and honourable lady. Seek forgiveness from those whom you may have hurt, and to reconcile with those who may have hurt you. There is nothing more honourable than to seek and offer forgiveness. Hell awaits you if you persist.

THE MALAYSIAN ARMY CELEBRATES ITS 78TH ANNIVERSARY
Yesterday, March 1st 2011, the Malaysian Army celebrates its 78th anniversary with an all arms parade held at Sg. Besi Camp. The parade square that had seen many Army Day parades has been given a new face lift, with a large covered grandstand that can seat around a thousand spectators, if not more. To all army cadets that were trained at the Federation Military College Sg. Besi, the roundabout at the entrance of the parade square was the landmark for cadets to do a turnabout during their evening run back to the college.
I remembered too that it was at the same roundabout where I took chase of a car driven by civilian contractor who was seen speeding along the stretch of road that leads to the military college. I caught the driver and ordered him out of the camp. The roundabout also reminds me of some ghostly incidents that had affected some soldiers on their midnight rounds.
I was stuck by the speech made by the Chief of Army (COA), Gen Zulkifi Mohd Zain at the Army Day Anniversary Parade when he said, “Although I am a soldier, this does not mean that I do not bother about politics……but I am not involved in politics. I keep abreast with political developments top keep myself well informed”.
That was the most welcomed speech ever to have come out from the COA. I welcome the speech because that puts the army in its correct perspective and to quell any misconception that people has of the army that it is a tool or a ‘poodle’ of politicians. It is also a reminder to soldiers and politicians alike that the army and the armed forces as a whole is apolitical organization, free of the abuses of politics.
There have been a number of cases in the past where politicians have attempted to take advantage of the army to spike their popularity, especially nearing an election. We observe such a thing happened during the by-election at Bagan Pinang, Port Dickson of which I was not too pleased about, and had expressed it my writings.
As soldiers, they are certain of their responsibilities, and they must be seen to play a non partisan role in politics, nor are soldiers to be exploited by politicians, consciously or otherwise. As rightly said by the COA, soldiers also have a responsibility towards society and this role must not be seen to have anything to do to ‘curry flavour’ the government. Soldiers have participated in a number of ‘hearts and minds’ activities notably in the remote and inaccessible areas and such activities should continue as soldier’s are a link between the government and those living in the remote areas.
Finally, I wish to congratulate the Army and in particular its leadership on the army’s 78th Anniversary.

EDUCATION MINISTRY TURN SANTA CLAUS
The government through the Education Ministry has allocated RM80 million to undertake maintenance of 600 schools and teachers quarters in Sarawak that are said to be at the verge of being condemned. The question that I would like to ask is why announced the allocation now? Why wait for the schools and quarters for teachers to reach such a poor condition before a maintenance allocation is handed out? It is unlikely that deterioration of the schools and teachers quarters occurred a few months ago? Definitely, it has started to deteriorate several years ago.
What has the state Department of Education or the Education Ministry been doing all this while? Wasn’t there a request for maintenance been made by the schools? I am quite certain there must have been some form of maintenance allocation, and where have the allocation disappeared in the past. Don’t tell me that there was no maintenance allocation at all.
Remember, I wrote an article on January 24, 2011 regarding Sekolah Menengah Sains Miri, Bakam, Sarawak were the students were told to relocate to another school, because their school was in such a poor condition and had to be torn down. I do not know what had happened to the school now.
Now, I want to be straight and cynical. Is it because of the up-coming state election that had awakened the Education Ministry and its minister to come up with such an allocation? And please do not tell me that it is coincidental or some ‘cock and bull’ story that the allocation has been planned many years ago, and the announcement made only recently? And don’t tell me that in the past, no state/federal ministers or state department/ministry officials has ever visited these schools or cared to visit the homes of the teachers? I have visited some schools in the interior of Sarawak and I can only say that some schools are slightly better than a chicken coop. Is this the way the state Education Department takes care of its students and teachers?
Now, what about the CM of Sarawak? Does he not know that the schools are about to collapse? Or is he too busy to even care about finding out, or does he go blindfolded during his round of visits? If what is written in Sarawak Report about the CM is true, then he is one filthy rich person. And why doesn’t he be like billionaire Vincent Tan who announced recently that half his wealth will be given out to charity. I am quite sure the CM has some extra to give out, and I think a few million as charity to schools is not too much for him to give out, if what is written about him is true. We all must thank Vincent Tan for his generosity and sets a sterling example for the CM to follow.
Honestly, I just cannot understand what is actually happening to Sarawak and the Education Ministry in particular. They say that education is so important and that the ministry gets one of the highest budget allocations. Yet they could lose sight of providing sufficient allocation for the maintenance of schools and teachers quarters, especially those in Sarawak, and may be in Sabah as well. Is this how the ministry interprets the famous slogan “Rakyat Di Dahulukan, Pencapaian Di Utamakan”. Are students in Sarawak not the rakyat of this country, to be attending schools in such dilapidated condition?
And it is only today that I knew the government has set aside an allocation of RM18.4 million to be paid to teachers and supporting staffs as incentive for their excellent performance. While I am not disputing that our teachers deserve such incentives, and in fact much more; but why give them now at a time prior to two by-elections and an impending state elections in Sarawak? I hope this is not going to be a one-off incentive, with the next incentive just prior to another by-election. If giving out such incentive is the government’s way of enticing votes, which most believe is the case; then I say that the Education Ministry’s action is insincere.
The education ministry can act like Santa Claus this time, but let’s see if they can do the same when the 13th General Election comes in about two years time.
